GUADALUPE, Santa Barbara County — October 27, 2026. The City of Guadalupe is working toward a new chapter for its historic Royal Theatre at 848 Guadalupe Street. Public Works documents outline a restoration of the existing theater and construction of an additional performing arts space, while a separate city notice details the search for an organization or team to operate future cultural programs.
What construction documents describe
The city’s official construction inventory identifies work to renovate the historic Royal Theatre under California historic-building requirements. The described scope also includes a new one-story performing arts building, amphitheater, parking lot, plaza and landscaping. The city says part of the project is supported with federal funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
The city provides a project status report and budget documents dated May 2026. These are useful for tracking financing and project development, but older budget snapshots should not be reported as a verified final price or a completion certificate.
Who will operate the theater?
On July 20, 2026, Guadalupe issued a request for proposals seeking a qualified nonprofit, foundation, arts organization or experienced team to serve as a Royal Theatre operator and programming partner. The application deadline in that notice was August 21, 2026 at 5 p.m. Because that deadline has passed, the original solicitation should not be treated as an active open application.
The notice allowed the city to reject proposals, negotiate with applicants or reissue the search. Without a subsequent signed agreement or council action, the 2026 request alone does not identify a selected operator.
Why this matters beyond the building
Performing arts programming could offer new space for local cultural organizations and visitors who already travel through Guadalupe toward the coast and nearby Santa Maria Valley. Specific event schedules, ticketing, access arrangements and operating hours must await official announcements.
